Case Study: Life Insurance for Male Age 66 with Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib) in California

William is a sixty-six year old married man living in beautiful southern California. He is still employed full time and is a high-income earner at a large corporation.  He plans on retiring in about 10 years. William has always been in good health and consistently lived a healthy, non-smoking lifestyle. Even so, William was diagnosed with high cholesterol and Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib). This made him more dedicated to his overall health. He began to follow a strict “heart healthy” diet and began walking an average of 3 miles a day to improve his cardiovascular health.

By the time William had reached us, he had already spoken to several agents with whom he was not satisfied. William had a group policy provided through his employer and was looking for individual life coverage to replace the existing policy, for which he was paying the full premium.  William was looking for term life insurance. We immediately began researching and sent him quotes ranging from $500,000 to $1.25 million. Taking William’s age and medical history into consideration, we began working closely with our underwriters to find the carriers who would offer him the best coverage. Our underwriters sent a summary of his profile to Transamerica, Protective, Minnesota Life, and American General. Transamerica came back with a Table D-F risk class rating. The other three companies all quoted a tentative Table D rating, but American General’s premium was the lowest.

After many at length conversations with both William and our underwriters, we decided to continue forth with American General. We felt that given William’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle through exercise and diet changes, we could convince American General to rate him at an improved risk class of Table C. We wrote personally on William’s behalf to the American General Underwriter reviewing his formal application. We included his most recent physical and stress test results, which showed he lowered his cholesterol and his EKG was normal. American General reviewed his case and approved William at a Table C! William currently has a $1.5 million, ten year term life insurance policy through American General at an improved risk class. He pays a $1,540 monthly premium, almost $2,000/year less than we originally quoted. William and his family were extremely grateful that we were willing to go the extra mile and make the special effort to personally contact American General on his behalf.
